Fathers. Where would we be without their care, guidance, and understanding? Not to mention their dad jokes, of course. This Father’s Day, show some love by spending the day with dad and exploring new and fun activities the whole family will enjoy.
A Day in the Park
Bright, sunny days are ideal for spending time outdoors. An afternoon in park with dad and the rest of the family is fun, engaging, and a great way to bond with dear old dad. All you need is a little preparation to make sure that the outing is memorable in all the right ways.
First of all, do some research on the spot you’ve chosen. Most parks have websites and checking these out will give you a good idea of what to expect. For example, can you book entry tickets online, will there be places that sell food, or are there special activities and spots you don’t want to miss?
It’s also a good idea to take along a picnic basket of some of Dad’s favorite food along with water to stay hydrated. A day or two before you set out, make sure that the family car is serviced, topped up, and ready to go.
Fishy Tales
A fishing trip is a wonderful way to spend Father’s Day. And not matter if you’re fishing for the first time or already have plenty of experience, the right preparations and precautions go a long way in making the trip a success.
Bring along a large backpack to carry all the supplies you need. Waterproof clothing can come in very handy, as well as sunscreen and basic medication, should you need it. If you own rods, tackle, and other fishing gear, get them in order. Otherwise, check to see where these can be rented for the day.
When choosing a spot, make sure to check out the conditions there. This will help you decide whether you need waders, tarps, or any other protective gear. Naturally, you’ll also need an icebox to bring home all that you’ve caught.
Have A DIY Day
Do-it-yourself projects can be a great activity for you and your dad, and all the rest of the family. You can do these inside the house, in your backyard after removing your table cover, or even in the garage or shed, depending on the nature of the project.
There are plenty of options when it comes to DIY projects. For example, you could build a bookshelf for all of Dad’s favorite books and magazines. Or build a fire pit for the cooler days to come. You could also refurbish furniture and backyard grills. Make sure you have chair covers and grill covers at the ready for when you’re finished.
A Day at the Museum
Does your father like ancient history? Or is he fascinated by science or art? Whatever his interests, there’s sure to be a museum that you can visit with him to scratch this itch.
As with parks, make sure to get online to check out the museum’s sites. Here, you’ll get to know their main collections, the items that are a must-see, and whether you can book tickets and tours online. Doing this will save you a lot of time when you finally get there.
Remember to tell everyone to wear comfortable footwear, as there could be a lot of walking involved. Many museums also have coffee shops, so you can have a welcome break and some refreshments when you need them. When the tour is over, remember to visit the souvenir shop and get Dad something he likes.
Bring Out the Bikes
The family that cycles together stays together. Father’s Day can is perfect for a bike ride to a special destination. You can announce plans to everyone or keep the destination secret so that it comes as a pleasant surprise.
If you already own bikes, make sure they’re oiled and you have puncture kits ready to take with you. Also important is safety gear, such as helmets and knee guards.
Plan the route in advance, checking for rest stops, the time it will take, and what you can do when you arrive. Pack food such as sandwiches and of course plenty of water.
Turn the Day into A Weekend
To make the fun of Father’s Day last for more than a day, why not turn it into a camping weekend? As always, preparation is key to having a good time. Find out as much as you can about the camping spot.
Check your camping equipment and don’t forget basic safety and protective gear and equipment. Also remember to place your chair covers and grill covers in your backyard before heading out, in case of inclement weather in your absence.
Then, choose the route you’ll take to get there and schedule rest breaks, not to mention snacks. Once you’re there, you should also have a plan for camping activities, from hiking and swimming to singing songs around the campfire and relaxing on the pillows you brought along, complete with their cushion cover.
