One thing we can say for sure is that over the course of the last three or four months, our lives have changed most likely forever. Trivial activities like going to the grocers or taking your pup for a walk have become cause for concern and extra planning. But one good thing that emerged from this global lockdown is the increased time spent with our family. Depending on which area in Australia you’re from, restrictions have been eased, but exercising caution is the way to go during these uncertain times. So we’ve put together a list of things you can do with your family this winter to make the most out of your time before easing cautiously toward your routine.
Backyard Bash
Fancy a game of tennis ball cricket? Or how about some footy fun? Turn your backyard into a sporting arena with creative ideas. Playing sports with the family is a great way for the kids to use their pent up energy and get some exercise in a fun way. Don’t let mum or the missus fuss over her expensive patio furniture, use outdoor furniture covers, and play without a worry. Some games that are worth a try include tennis, frisbee, basketball and lawn bowling apart from the musts like cricket and footy.
Kitchen Chronicles
Getting the kids involved in the kitchen is a fabulous way to keep them occupied. Mixing the cake batter or helping out with the pasta dough will give the children a chance to spend quality time with parents. Ask for their ideas on the Sunday roast menu or have them give their inputs on the lemon tarts. Letting kids enjoy time in the kitchen is also a good way to reduce ‘screen time’ and keep their minds away from the negativity of social media. If you’re up to it, grilling with the kids is a surefire hit. Take off those protective grill covers and get cracking on some lamb chops. Just make sure the children are never too close to hot surfaces and are careful around the flames.
Living Room Campout
Your living room is by far the most unused space when it comes to having fun indoors. Don’t believe us? You will when you spend the night with your little one in a tent smack in the middle of the living room. Don’t worry about the stink-eye you get from mum for rearranging the sofas; she’ll be smiling when she sees the custom sofa covers from the patio protecting the upholstery inside. Throw in a couple of ghost stories and your living room campout will be a roaring success.
Movie Nights
One of the best ways to get the whole family together is to screen some all-time favourites. Pass around that caramel popcorn and snuggle together for some classics like the Indiana Jones series or cling to the edge of your seats while watching the Avengers save the world. You can even make it kids’ choice and have them pick out their favourites to watch together for a wholesome family time.
We highly recommend these movies for an unmatched family movie night:
- Toy Story
- Home Alone
- Up
- Star Wars
- Harry Potter series
The Greatest Gift
While we all imagined that a big health scare was possible, believing in one that was so big that it would stop the world? Not many. But having more quality time with your family is the greatest gift imaginable. So get your flock together and enjoy these safe, wholesome, family-centered activities. For a family that enjoys together, stays healthy and happy together. Always.
